Story of rakshabandhan:
There is a legend about Rakhi that the first Rakhi was tied by goddess Lakshmi to King Bali.
By taking the form of Vamana from the demon sacrifice, Lord Vishnu took everything in three steps. God gave the kingdom of Hades to Bali, then Bali told the Lord that I am ready to live, but give this promise that when I wake up, I will see you wherever I look. Thus Bali made Vishnu his guard. Lakshmi ji started getting worried in Baikunth. Then Narada told him that Narayan was in the underworld. On the persuasion of Narada, Lakshmi took the form of a beautiful woman and made King Bali a brother and tied her a protective thread. In Dakshina, she asked for the guard who was actually lord Vishnu his husband. In this way Lakshmi freed Narayan from the bondage. Therefore, while tying the thread of protection, this mantra is recited.
