Constellations and zodiac Signs in vedic astrology: A rashi is formed by 2 or 3 constellations and that is why when a native is named, the letter of his name is taken out on the basis of nakshatra(constellations).

The first letter of the name is taken out on the basis of the phase of the nakshatra in which the native is born.

According to Vedic astrology there are 12 zodiacs, each zodiac is of 30 degrees and there are 27 nakshatras. Every rashi is formed by the combination of constellations. Every nakshatra has 4 phases which are called 4 parts of nakshatra and the letters of every phase are different.

What are constellations or nakshatra?

The group of stars situated in the sky is called Nakshatra. Indian sages discovered 27 groups which were special. One Nakshatra is of 13.20 degrees.

The 27 Nakshatras have also been divided into three parts. Shubh Nakshatra i.e. auspicious constellation, Madhyam Nakshatra and Ashubh Nakshatra i.e. inauspicious constellation.

  1. It is believed that the work done in Shubh Nakshatras is successful. These include 15 Nakshatras - Rohini, Ashwin, Mrigasira, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Revati, Shravan, Swati, Anuradha, Uttarabhadrapada, Uttarashadha, Uttara Phauni, Ghanistha, Punarvasu.
  2. The second number is Madhyam Nakshatra for which it is said that the work done in these is moderately fruitful. These are 8 and their names are as follows - Purva Phalguni, Purvashadha, Purvabhadrapada, Vishaka, Jyeshtha, Ardra, Moola and Shatabhisha. 
  3. The third number is inauspicious nakshatras and it is believed that work done in these nakshatras brings problems and one has to struggle more. These are 4 in numbers and there names are - Bharani, Krittika, Magha and Ashlesha.

What is Panchak?

Panchak occurs when the moon passes through the nakshatras of Aquarius and Pisces which are - Dhanishta, Shatabhisha, Purvabhadrapada, Uttarabhadrapada, Revati. Read details about Significance of Panchak here
